Uma Indicação ao Oscar: Ator (Colin Firth)
California, início dos anos 60. George (Colin Firth, em atuação irretocável, digna de Oscar) recebe a notícia de que seu parceiro morreu em um acidente de carro. Após dezesseis anos juntos, de forma trágica, vê seu mundo desabar. Ele não consegue mais sentir os prazeres da vida, mesmo após meses terem se passado. Seu mundo é cinza, frio e pessimista. Com o tempo, o contato com outras pessoas lhe traz momentos mais coloridos, mas, mesmo assim, ele se mantém no luto e evita se relacionar profundamente com quem quer que seja. A belíssima trilha sonora dá o tom de seus melancólicos momentos solitários e da brevidade dos felizes, mas é a fotografia do filme que salienta esta dualidade.
George é um professor universitário com fortes tendências à contracultura e esbarra em uma academia ainda infestada pelos pensamentos Macarthistas. Qualquer fuga às regras estabelecidas é taxada de subversão. Além disso, os treze dias que abalaram o mundo (quando a União Soviética instalou mísseis em Cuba, apontados para os EUA), geraram uma tensão que não influenciou somente as relações militares e políticas, mas as sociais também. Abrigos antibombas foram criados e cada um tinha sua lista de “convidados”. Estes evitavam nutrir sentimentos por quem estava fora da lista. Não era algo prático se envolver com quem não pudesse se abrigar.
Uma pessoa como George, que vai contra a multidão, não se sentia à vontade nesse mundo e, como remédio, tome álcool, comprimidos e uma arma carregada. O suicídio é a única opção, a única saída que encontra. Ele não encontra refúgio nem em Charley (Julianne Moore, em ótima atuação), sua melhor amiga. Mas Kenny (Nicholas Hoult), um aluno do seu curso de inglês, tenta fazer seu professor ver a vida de outra forma. Com mais alegria. Com mais vontade. Será que ele irá conseguir? Em sua estreia como diretor, o designer de moda Tom Ford apresenta um filme denso, melancólico e reflexivo, que merece ser visto.

There are certainly a lot of details like that to take into consideration. That is a great point to bring up.
